The Incredible Benefits of Therapy Dogs: A Family’s Story

How Nixie the Cavoodle became the perfect companion for a child with special needs

This story is a heartwarming example of how pets, particularly dogs, can be extremely beneficial to people with special needs, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASC). ASC can be an overwhelming diagnosis for families, and the key recommendation to get a cat for sensory, anxiety, and well-being intervention may not be feasible for everyone. However, the Cavoodle breed provided a solution for the family in this story.

Cavoodles are a hybrid breed that is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. These dogs are well-known for their hypoallergenic coats and affectionate personalities, making them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers and those looking for a companion dog. Therapy dogs can provide emotional support and comfort to people with special needs, particularly those suffering from anxiety or depression.

Real Stories: Nixie The Cavoodle

5 Years ago my daughter received a diagnosis of ASC (autism spectrum condition). The key recommendation from the diagnosing expert was that we get her a cat (which she desperately wanted) as a sensory, anxiety and well-being intervention.

I’m not a fan of cats, and my husband is allergic to animal dander so we have always had big outside dogs.

A few weeks of research layer, we came across the Cavoodle breed. The more we looked, the more we thought we had our solution. We found a darling little girl and then organised pick up to get her home.

Our cavoodle, Nixie, has been the best family decision we ever made, without question. She brightens everybody’s day, brings out our playful side, cuddles us when someone is upset or anxious, and is a constant source of happiness to all.

We joke that she is a cat-dog because she often exhibits more cat-like traits than dog-like traits. She is more cuddly that cats typically are, though, and her enthusiasm for my daughter in all contexts is beautiful.

She has improved her quality of life 100-fold, has decreased her anxiety a huge amount, and is noticeably improving my daughter’s (and whole family’s) well being every single day.

What a blessing cavoodles are to us all!

Therapy dogs have been shown in studies to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress in people with special needs, particularly children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dogs, particularly Cavoodles, can help children feel calmer and more relaxed, allowing them to focus and learn more effectively. Dogs can also be wonderful companions for special-needs children, providing unconditional love and a nonjudgmental presence.

Finally, the story of Nixie, the Cavoodle, exemplifies how dogs can make a positive difference in the lives of people with special needs. While not every dog is suitable for therapy work, breeds such as the Cavoodle, with their hypoallergenic coat and affectionate personality, make excellent candidates. If you’re thinking about getting a therapy dog for yourself or a loved one, do your research and work with a reputable breeder or rescue organisation to find the best dog for your specific needs.
